Woodworking is the general ability to carve, shape, and treat wood, crafting it into useful items. More complex construction may require the Construction skill, but Woodworking alone can cover some basic construction such as some simpler furniture items. In addition to having multiple applications, Woodworking also tends to be constantly useful due to the fact that wood pieces will occasionally need to be replaced.

Carving

What you'll need:

  • Wood to carve, depending on the project (anything from large logs to small branches)
  • Tools, depending on the project (nearly everything requires a carving knife of some kind - additional tools can include: hammer, axe, saw, drill, awl, chisel, writing charcoal, and many more)
  • Additional components, depending on the project (nails, rivets, wedges, hinges, and so on)

Steps

  1. Have the base piece of wood you wish to work with in hand or on the ground.
  2. Use the carve command to target the piece of wood and show a list of your options. Example: carve large straight branch
  3. carve <piece> make <option> to begin working on the project. Example: carve large straight branch make flatbow stave. You will be prompted to provide any additional required tools or components if they are missing.

Notes

  • Not to be confused with Woodcutting.
  • Greater skill can unlock more advanced "recipes".
  • Woodworking is likely to be in high demand, due to the wide variety of crafts and components it can produce.
  • Make friends with a metalworker to help make, repair, and replace your tools, as well as to provide you with metal components such as nails, rivets, and hinges. You can in turn trade your service back by providing wooden pieces and components that the metalworker will certainly need in some of their own projects.
  • While it may be tempting to take up Woodcutting as well to provide your own wood to work with, both woodworking and woodcarving are rather tiring and time-consuming activities. Consider outsourcing the woodcutting instead if you can, and trade services.
