Woodcutting

Woodcutting is the process of felling and processing timber, and is vital for providing wood to builders and woodworkers.

Process

What you'll need:

  • Something to chop with, such as a logging axe (handaxes and hatchets won't do for felling, but can be used for de-branching)
  • A handcart or wagon (not strictly necessarily, but highly recommended)

Basic Timber

  1. survey around in forested areas to find the type of tree you're looking for.
  2. fell the desired tree
  3. Once the tree is down, chop the tree to remove the branches.
  4. Once de-branched, chop the tree again to chop it into large logs.
  5. heave the logs into a handcart or wagon for transport.

Further Optional Processing

  1. chop the large logs into split logs. (Useful for firewood and some woodworking projects)
  2. chop the split logs into wooden blocks. (Useful for some woodworking projects)

Or ...

  1. carve the large logs into hewn timbers. (Useful for various woodworking and construction projects)
  2. carve the hewn timbers into long planks. (Ditto)
  3. carve the long planks into medium planks. (Ditto)
  4. carve the medium planks into short planks. (Ditto)

Notes

  • Not to be confused with Woodworking.
  • De-branching trees will produce quite a lot of branches, particularly with larger trees. The crooked ones can be sold at market or used as firewood. The straight ones are useful to woodworkers for various crafts.
  • Increased Woodcutting skill increases the speed and efficiency of most woodcutting processes.
  • Some unique types of trees/timber may require higher skill levels and researched techniques in order to acquire and process the timber without losing special properties or outright ruining it.
  • Once a tree is cut down into a stump, stump removal can be attempted with a mount, rope, and some help.
