Metallurgy
From COGG
Jump to navigationJump to searchMetallurgy is the processing of ores into metal, creating metal alloys, and casting metal objects.
Also see the list of Metalcast Items (which can be made if one skilled in Pottery makes a clay mold of a template item of the same type).
Smelting Ore
What you'll need:
- A heavy apron (or risk burning your clothes and your skin)
- Protective gloves (or risk burning your hands)
- Crushed stone powder containing ore
- Some kind of flux, such as charcoal
- Access to a smithy furnace
Steps:
put
(ortransfer
) ore-containing stone powder into the furnace.put
flux into the furnace. (Don't forget, or you'll end up with highly impure metal!)ever.pull
the chain that operates the furnace bellows continuously until you hear the intermittent hiss of molten slag.pull
the furnace lever to briefly open the slag chute and drain the molten slag.- Continue
pull
ing the chain until you hear the hiss of molten metal in the furnace. - Wait for the furnace to cool.
get
(ortransfer
) the resulting metal bloom from the furnace.
Casting
What you'll need:
- A heavy apron (or risk burning your clothes and your skin)
- Protective gloves (or risk burning your hands)
- Some metal to melt down (not ore - see smelting above)
- Access to a smithy furnace
- A mold of the types of item you wish to cast the metal into
Steps:
drop
the desired mold(s) so they're on the ground.put
(ortransfer
) metal into the furnace.pull
the chain that operates the furnace bellows continuously until you hear the hiss of molten metal.metalcast
the metal into the desired mold. (Typingmetalcast
by itself will provide a list of options based on any molds present in the room.)- Wait for the cast metal item(s) to cool.
get
the cast metal item(s) from the mold(s).
Notes
- Metallurgy should not be confused with Metalworking, which is a different skill involving things like forging with a hammer and anvil.
- Casting is generally a much faster production method than forging, but tends to produce inferior products since ferrous metals such as iron or steel can't be cast, and cast metals generally can't be forged. The quality of cast items also can't be refined higher as with forging.
- Consider befriending a miner to give you easier access to metal ores.
- Consider befriending a potter to give you easier access to clay molds for casting.
