Death in the game tends to be an undesirable inconvenience, as one might expect, but it isn't the end! (At least, not for the Undying. Those who chose not to be Undying at character creation will lose their character permanently.)

When an Undying character dies, they will respawn somewhere else, wearing some very minimal clothes. The how and why of the situation are intentionally vague - neither the player nor the character know how they ended up where they did, only that they blacked out (died) and woke up sometime later in an entirely different place, without their gear. Lore-wise, this miraculous occurrence is observed only within the Lost Lands region, and is unheard of anywhere else in the known world. Some individuals will also experience a final death eventually, though when it comes to Player Characters there is no limit, for game enjoyment purposes - though the characters don't know that IC.

An Undying character's gear stays on their previous corpse when they die. (Yes, it's canon that the Undying can come across their own corpse.) To avoid griefing, only that character can reclaim the gear from their own corpse, so there's no need to worry about someone else stealing one's gear after death. When in front of one's own corpse, the recover command can be used to recover all gear from it. Worn items will be worn if slots are available. Anything that can't be worn or carried will be placed on the ground, and must be manually picked up or stowed.

Player corpses will not despawn. Don't rush to reclaim it as quickly as possible if the death was due to a dangerous situation like hostile mobs, as they'll be even more dangerous to a character without any gear. Consider asking for help in such situations. The esp command can be used from the Twilight Eye offices on the second floor of the Shadgard Town Hall, even without an ESP artifact.

Other players will often attempt to be helpful and drag corpses they find to the crypts in the Shadgard church, which can be found on the south side of town. If one is having trouble finding their corpse in the area of death, there's a good chance a kind soul has brought it to the crypt, or is in the process of doing so. Take a look there for it, and ask via esp if not.

Note: Intentionally dragging someone else's corpse out of the way in order to try and prevent the owner from recovering it is highly discouraged, and can be considered griefing.
