When an Undying character dies, they will respawn somewhere else, wearing some very minimal clothes.  The how and why of the situation are intentionally vague - neither the player nor the character know how they ended up where they did, only that they blacked out (died) and woke up sometime later in an entirely different place, without their gear. Lore-wise, this miraculous occurrence is observed only within the [[Lost Lands]] region, and is unheard of anywhere else in the known world.  Some individuals will also experience a final death eventually, though when it comes to [[Player Character]]s there is no limit, for game enjoyment purposes.

Death in the game tends to be an undesirable inconvenience, as one might expect, but it isn't the end! (At least, not for the Undying. Those who chose not to be Undying at character creation will lose their character permanently.)

When an Undying character dies, they will have a chance to have their soul reunited with their body and have another chance at life. Lore-wise, this miraculous occurrence is observed only within the Lost Lands region, and is unheard of anywhere else in the known world. Some individuals will also experience a final death eventually, though when it comes to player characters there is no limit, for game enjoyment purposes - though the characters don't know that IC.

After dying, a character's soul will have opportunities to ring the Deathknell by looking at a bell in the death area. This will put out a signal to others with Deathknell sensitivity training (said training can be acquired at Twilight Eye services office, commonly found on the second floor of your local Town Hall), which can be heard by anyone with an ESP artifact regardless of ESP zone (even if not in a zone at all). This signal will alert others who can hear the Deathknell that the character has died and will reveal the dead character's aura, as well as give an estimate to others of their proximity to the dead character's corpse. Additionally, the other characters will be able to use the aura who command to see the aura and corpse proximity information for anyone who has recently rang the Deathknell within the past few minutes in order to help them home in on the corpse's location for a rescue.

Once the dead character's corpse is in a crypt, the next ring of the Deathknell by the dead character's soul will start the revival process automatically. There is no time limit to worry about. Player corpses will never despawn and cannot be looted. The dead character's gear will all be restored to them when they are revived.

If for any reason a dead character's corpse is not able to be recused by other player characters and brought to a crypt, or it is simply not happening in a timely fashion, the soul of the unfortunate dead may receive an offer of aid from other entities. One should be advised that there is likely to be a cost in exchange for aid from such entities, however ...

Penalties

Dying causes a very large hit to a character's sanity and morale stats. Physickers have some therapy abilities that can speed recovery of both sanity and morale significantly, so it's always a good idea to seek one out after a death. Death also inflicts a temporary "death sickness" effect which includes the following penalties during the duration:

  • Energy recovery capped at 41% of a character's total energy pool.
  • Energy recovery rate reduced by 50%.
  • Inability to broadcast over ESP.

Rescue Efforts

As stated above, taking a corpse to a crypt will allow the soul of the dead character to initiate the revival process. Another option is to take a corpse to a site manned by priests of Undm the Soulkeeper, which will have said priests automatically take the corpse to the appropriate crypt based on citizenship, faction standing, etc. This is particularly important if a potential rescuer does not have access to the corpse owner's home town. Such sites can be found in the following locations:

  • Shrine of the Soulkeeper in Lower Timberpine Forest just outside the trail to Shadgard

(The below locations are temporary until more fitting dedicated locations are added)

  • Just outside Fort Haarskard south gate in Sorveggen Pass
  • Phoenix Court in New Emberlight
  • Library of Qamar Annex Building
  • Stormholdt Castle Storehouse

(Staff is debating granting some sort of reward for rescuing corpses, with a greater reward for taking directly to a crypt and a lesser reward for taking to NPCs who will deliver the corpse from there.)

Note: Intentionally dragging someone else's corpse out of the way in order to try and prevent the owner from being revived is against policy.
