Climbing

Climbing is a skill that aids in virtually all climbing situations such as rock climbing, rope climbing, and so forth. A necessary skill for the rugged explorer who wants no paths barred.

Climbs without a challenge rating require no skill and will immediately transport the climber to the destination. This includes most stairs, ladders, etc.

Climbs with a challenge rating require enough Climbing skill to make the required skill checks, and also enough time and energy to complete the climb. Challenging climbs have a height assigned to them as well as a challenge. The greater the height, the more climbing checks must be made to complete the climb. Once a climb has been started, the character cannot stop climbing until they get to the top or the bottom of the climb, jump down from where they are, or otherwise are caused to fall.

The up and down commands can be used to switch directions mid-climb. If a climber is getting low on energy and hasn't made it more than halfway up a climb, it is recommended to climb back down to the bottom, take a rest to regain energy, and try again. Climbing downward is both less challenging and spends less energy.

A climber going upward will be moved to the higher destination room when they are at 50% or more of the climb's height, but will still need to complete the remaining skill checks to complete the climb. Likewise, a climber going downward will be moved to the lower destination room when they are at less than 50% of the climb's height but will still need to complete the remaining skill checks.

CAUTION: Getting to the "Exhausted" phase of energy will cause the climber to fall from wherever they are in their climb, and the higher they are when falling the more likely they'll get injured and the more damage they'll take when suffering fall injuries. Falling from great heights can be fatal!

Certain events can cause a climber to risk losing their grip and potentially falling. These events include particularly bad Climbing skill rolls, being struck by significantly damaging attacks, various (but not all) disabling effects, and more.

When climbing, one can only be targeted by melee actions when near the very top or bottom of the climb. During these points the climber cannot:

  • Fend off or avoid melee attacks due to combat position
  • Tumble or flip away from melee attacks
  • Parry
  • Block
  • Dodge well at all (penalty of -10 rerolls)

Run into a climb challenge that you can't overcome? Consider asking if anyone with more skill can climb up and hang a rope for you to climb more easily!
