Stealing

Stealing is the action of taking items from other characters without their knowing. This works on both PCs and NPCs, as long as the mark has an open held or worn container to steal from. Money and small items can be stolen from marks this way, but larger items are usually impossible to steal outside special circumstances (special events and such).

Usage

  • steal <target> to try and steal from a specific mark.
  • steal crowd to try and steal from random bystanders in rooms with NPC crowd levels.

Factors

The following factors contribute to stealing success:

  • Artifice skill
  • Stealth skill (less so than Artifice, but it helps)
  • Risk
  • Room lighting (darker is better)
  • Room fog (foggier is better)
  • Room noise (noisier is better)
  • Room crowd, including both PC and NPC (larger crowds are better)
  • The mark's Perception skill
  • The mark's Artifice skill (if they know the tricks of the trade, they also know how to notice and defend against them)
  • Whether the mark is watching you
  • Whether the mark is busy with or distracted by something else at the moment
  • Whether the mark is feeling paranoid (caused by having recently caught someone trying to steal from them or hide from them)

Notes

  • Stealing increases Risk fairly quickly, so take a break after every few pulls to ensure you don't push your luck too much.
  • If you get caught stealing in an area with a justice system (such as in town), you'll likely soon find yourself sitting around in jail and having to pay fines.
  • Be smart about choosing your mark. If you steal from someone who is some sort of town official or other individual of particular station or status, you may receive additional punishments on top of the standard jail time and fees, and may suffer reputation consequences with whatever organization they might be affiliated with.
  • Particularly wary of someone else whom you suspect is a thief? watch them closely to be far more likely to catch them doing shady things.
