Soul Detection is an ability that can be learned by characters.

  • IC description: By sending out subtle and virtually invisible wisps of nether, one can sense the presence of other significant souls in the area. While impractical in larger crowds, it can be invaluable in smaller meeting situations where one wishes to determine whether there might be an entity hidden from view nearby, even if it does not reveal the precise location of said hidden entities. Do note that the spell often fails to detect "smaller" or less potent souls, souls that are significantly alien or unfamiliar to the caster, and some entities that are capable of masking their presence. That is to say: It should not be considered a foolproof means of detection.
  • The spell may also be used in a more focused manner: When directed at a bleeding creature or a blood sample, the spell can establish a tenuous link between the souls of the target and the caster, allowing subsequent indirected castings to give the caster a feeling for how far away these linked souls may be. Again, note that this is not a foolproof or flawless spell, and may fail for any number of reasons such as if the linked soul is less aware (as can happen when sleeping) or so focused on a thought or task that the soul does not subconsciously respond, too distant, in certain areas that can block or obscure such links, and so on.
  • OOC description: (When cast without a target, detects the number of significant souls in an area, tells how many of said detected souls are hidden (but does not reveal their location or identity), and gives an estimate of the distance and direction between the caster and any linked souls. When cast at a bleeding target or a blood sample, forms a temporary link between the caster and target that can be used for rough location purposes and potential use in further spells. Max number of simultaneous links is 1 + (Sorcery Skill / 175).)
  • Usage: While channeling sorcery: cast sdetect to check for nearby souls and the distance/direction of any linked souls. cast sdetect <target> to target a bleeding creature, corpse, or blood vial in order to establish a soul link. unlink to remove an active soul link.
