OOC stands for Out-Of-Character, meaning talk and other activity that is not in context of the game from in in-character (or IC) perspective. Discussing character stats such as energy points or the numeric mechanical bonuses of a strength effect would be considered out-of-character, as would be discussion of combat roll numbers or skill points. None of this would be discussed or referenced by characters in the game world itself, but rather by the players sitting at their keyboards who are aware that the world their characters inhabit is in fact a game.

In an attempt to not break the roleplay environment, OOC talk in the game itself is restricted to the question command (which syncs with our Discord Server), the tell command, and to specific rooms or scenarios such as talking with a GM about a game issue or sending a bug report. Rooms in which it is okay to be out-of-character are indicated with "OOC" next to the room name. Examples would be the Mentor Lounge where volunteer players known as Mentors give game advice and guidance to others, or the Mysterious Room where GMs will often pull players for out-of-character discussions.

The term OOC is also sometimes used to refer to metagaming behavior, such as characters acting on knowledge they should not have in-character when the player is aware of it due to out-of-character knowledge. For instance, if Player A told Player B via instant message or email about a hidden secret door in the game, Player B's character should still not be aware of the door's location - the player is aware of it, but nobody in-game and in-character has told Player B's character about it.
