The effect of the alleged Templar treason in Ivial

Post by Candelori »

The subject of the disbandment of the Knights Templar following accusations of treason came up today, and some of us found ourselves wondering how this has been received by the people of Ivial and how it has affected the views of thaumaturges there.

It's been a rather divisive matter. The Templar, and thaumaturges in general, have been historically extremely highly-regarded by the people of Ivial. The King's accusation that they were conspiring with the enemies of Ivial to overthrow him has not been well for his public relations and approval ratings, but it has also spawned a growing group that are strongly siding with the King and backing up his claims, likely a mix of true belief and others seeing it as an opportunity to gain favor and be elevated in position and status as they prove their loyalty.

While the original accusation was against the Templar specifically, the obvious following conclusion was that many/all Thaumaturges were in on it with them, as they're a rather close-knit group of people who support one another quite a lot, so now even non-Templar thaumaturges in Ivial are under suspicion, and even a degree of suspicion on the entirety of the Church of St.Vito (most of whom are not thaumaturges, but still heavily associated).

The situation is being mirrored somewhat here in the Lost Lands as the Dominion has shown their support of the Viali King's accusation and have pledged to help track down any treasonous usurpers that may have fled to the Lost Lands and deliver them to proper Viali investigation and justice.

Back to Ivial, though. A lot of the Viali people seem to be skeptical of the accusations. There hasn't been much in the way of concrete evidence to back up the King's accusations of treason, but it's not exactly easy to deny the King's word on something in Viali society. It's been forming rifts between those who believe it and those who don't. You've got the typical conspiracy theories popping up now amidst all the confusion, some accusing the King and some accusing the Templar/thaumaturges/Church. The Church of St.Vito and its thaumaturges (including the Templar) have long been pillars of Viali society, but on the other hand, there has been an increasing schism in the church regarding various doctrines, such as whether to worship Serafina or not, debates about whether the Church should have influence or representation in politics, claims that some branches of the church are breaking from the Edict's focus on modesty and humility by amassing wealth and building increasingly opulent churches and whatnot, etc. Because of all that, the Church isn't in quite as high a standing as it has been in the past.

With this latest mess on top of the King's apparently inability to keep his lords along the Nuumic and Rhuidic borders under control (reports of increasing border disputes and skirmishes with neighbors), there are rumors of a growing number of people questioning whether the King is fit to rule and worries of potential rebellion, though those loyal to the King (or to Ivial itself as a unified nation) are insisting this is more work of the treasonous Templar and their scheming allies trying to destabilize the Kingdom. Things are tense yet mostly peaceful at the moment, but there is a very serious potential storm brewing.
