Arcane Networks

Post by uhex »

This idea revolves entirely around one glyph, which will be refereed to as 'node glyph' for the purpose of this post.
The purpose of this glyph is to bind multiple circles together to create a 'network', which are designed to be somewhat persistent circles that have their own unique function when combined with other circles bearing this glyph. The sustain energy cost of this glyph should be high, maybe ~200 energy per glyph.

On it's own, the node glyph will act as a battery, allowing the activator of the circle to input energy to charge the circle and by extension, the network. The network will have a maximum capacity of energy, which can be used to power other circles on the network by subtracting the sustain energy cost of each glyph hourly from the total energy in the network. This also encourages the would be owners of the network to maintain it at the risk of the whole network collapsing. Failure to pass the upkeep check should erase the network.

When combined with other glyphs, the node glyph will unlock several functions:

Node : Allows members of the network to withdraw energy at the loss of a 3:1 ratio.
+ Shaol : This circle act as a record for everything pertaining to the network, a book and writing utensil can be left in the room which will record everything that the other nodes will report; preferably with a timestamp and some sort of ambient message to the room when something is being recorded (Maybe have the writing utensil float and write in the book?).
+ Uyto : Allows the 'says' of anyone in the room to be recorded to the network (Ignores whispers for balance reason).
+ Distyr : The circle will monitor passerby's (with a perception check based on arcane skill maybe?) based on their aura, and report passerby's to the network. The record will report the color of aura, direction it entered and heading.
+ Solca : Anything said within this room will be projected to other rooms containing a node glyph on the network.
+ Terlu : Prevents the effects of Node + Solca from firing in the room.
+ Cosir/Fathys : Will allow these glyphs to draw energy from the network, should not count the sustain cost for the node glyph attached to the circle.

To address if someone tries to erase the circles:
+ Iquaj : Blurs/hides the circle with the node glyph, can be found via perception check.
+ Dorun: Grants circles a forcefield with a set HP(tbd) that can absorb damage and regenerates the forcefield when not taking damage, 'breaks' when out of hitpoints.
+ Taqet : Grants the circle an projectile attack that attacks anyone who tries to erase the circle.

The nodes should be able to be turned off and on when triggered via activator glyphs.

Allow arcanists to build networks together, and raise the maximum energy cap based on the number of cooperating arcanists/members. Maybe by interacting with the battery node?

In the future, maybe allow arcane espionage by allowing other arcanists to hijack/tap into the network for their own purposes.

I came up with this idea because I really like the idea of semi-persistent circles with a set function (cosir, fathys, kaylaj) instead of one-time effects/buffs. The occult arts section under the 'Nuum' help page also provided some inspiration.

Addendum: The 'node glyph' could probably be it's own shape, like the 'small circle'.
