California Hurricane Warning

Post by Marcuson »

(Note: I am not a meteorologist. Listen to local news and heed any official advisories.)

If you live in Baja California peninsula, Southern California, or Southern Nevada, be warned that Hurricane Hilary is a major hurricane -- as of this post, Category 4 with sustained winds of 130 mph (215 km/h) -- whose effects will be felt along the Pacific coast beginning today (Saturday, August 19) and last well into the week.

Storm surge, heavy rainfall, and flooding are forecast to be the main dangers presented by Hurricane Hilary. If you live in a low-lying area or any other zone where flooding regularly occurs, take action now to get ready for the storm, whether that means making plans to stay with friends or family, or preparing to hunker down. DON'T walk or drive through floodwaters; six inches of fast-moving water can knock you over, and twelve inches can carry away most cars.

You can find additional advisories at the National Hurricane Center's official website:

Make sure to follow weather forecasts and take a moment to locate a reliable source of up-to-date local news and advisories for your specific area. Stay safe.
