There's been some in-character discussion of the watchtower close to the abandoned canyon village - that it could be fixed up and made actually functional again (made structurally sound with repairs, made habitable, etc.). There's a list of stuff people want to do to it, probably!
The main useful change the tower could use right now is having events that happen in the "surroundings" echo to the top of the tower. That way someone could actually stay at the top of the watchtower and be able to tell what's happening on the road.
