Newbie Tasks!

A few of these came up recently and I wanted to put them on the BBS while I remembered to so that they'd be preserved for whenever it next gets worked on.
  • Ask NPC about chat (introduce this thing that can be done for any new players that aren't going to read ALL the changelogs of eras past)
  • Buy a bar of soap and go wash in the bath house (introduction to the morale system)
  • Ask an NPC for their name (introduction to the game's naming system, maybe have this be an earlier or later step in the ask NPC about chat task)
  • Buy a pendant and use aura to pick a color (intro to the esp system and aura command - maybe don't give them starter pendants and give them an additional 500 riln? Since pendants wear out and colors become available when people don't log on, I don't think there is a real need for starter pendants any more)
  • Sell something at the markets (maybe add a random mundane item (plate, fork, spoon, furniture knob, hinge, nails, thread, bandage, etc.) to everyone's starter pack and have that be a part of their sell quest).
  • Make a campfire! (introduce foraging for wood, build syntax, and how to not freeze to death because cold - this might actually pair REALLY well with the sell something at a market - watch the campfire burn out and then the next step is to go sell the charcoal. It'd be great because charcoal is really nice to have for smiths and a timesuck for not great riln to make)
This list is probably incomplete, please feel free to chime in with any additions, especially for any mechanics you feel are central to the game but about which you needed to ask someone how to do the thing.

By popular demand:
  • A basics of travel task:
    • Step 1, head out of the canyon to the north and wander/go wilderness to the overland map (finding how to get out of Shadgard - important if you don't want everyone to be farmers)
    • Step 2, travel n ne (introduction to the travel command, and travel syntax allowing you to stack directions for forks - it might be good to add a help file for the travel command that covers that syntax though, currently there is no help travel and travel with no direction only shows current options, not info that you can stack directions)
    • Step 3, stop at the sawmill OR continue traveling all the way to the main fork and read sign (reading signs should be obvious, but it might be worth it to hand out a bit of XP to encourage people to get into that habit.)
    • Step 4, Make it back to Shadgard?
And by less popular demand:
  • A basics of combat task:
    • Step 1, go to the barracks, talk with NPC there who needs you to throw a fight maybe? Or lose to build up the confidence of a recruit who's important because nepotism? Or get punched a few times to train their raw recruits? Whatever the reason, you're encouraged to go into a fight and do badly - I'd love a properly sympathetic cause, but it'd probably be more fun to write up some rich person's boy needs to feel special, you're ok taking a fall right?
    • Step 2, choose (throw the first punch by using attack before your opponent and get thumped for having low roundtime) OR (wait for their first punch and then throw your own, thumping them with roundtime penalties) OR (stand around and get hit a few times, #ThaumaturgeLife, thanks for being raw meat, here's some riln for your trip to the physicker) (you can do badly as prompted, or try to be competent to undermine the person, because boo nepotism or lolz new recruits)
    • Step 3, go visit the physicker and get patched up
