Rawhide/leather/fur ideas

Post by Teri »

I've been thinking of some pelt usage ideas with rawhide. I've read some suggestions here viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1069&p=3946#p3946 in regard to some more primitive leather working that doesn't require buckles, with a follow up suggestion of being able to carve bone toggles and so on for this. Bone needles, awl and etc would be further suggestions for, along with bone tools for scraping for the methods I mention below.

This post is for my rambling ideas about the rawhide creation itself, not entirely for recipes beyond a basic shirt/pants/containers. Leather is hide that has been tanned to make it softer and easier to work with, where the rawhide is going to be stiffer. A bushcrafting recipe to make tanning frames would also probably makes sense for these. I might revisit this later with more ideas, but I have some other bushcrafting ones rattling around in my head.

Method 1: https://www.wildnesswithinliving.com/bl ... to-rawhide
Skin pelt
Flesh and scrape meat/fat etc off with dull (usually done on log that has been carved smooth)
Soak skin, then use dull tool to scrape off hair
if hair is desired, dry.
From this guide "Soaking- Generally the first step in using rawhide is rehydrating it to return it to a more workable state. Soak in warm water to accelerate absorption. Let the hide drip dry for a few minutes before bringing it to the workspace"
After soaking, cut pieces, and assemble
Anything made from rawhide will shrink as it dries, so from that guide they suggest filling a pouch or container packed with dried grasses

Method 2: Requires some kind of container for soaking
Soaking the hide in ashes, usually from a mix of hard and softwood https://sensiblesurvival.org/2011/12/19/making-rawhide/
Or soaking the hide in brains (I think I saw Lexx suggest this one time) http://www.braintanbuckskin.com/Tanning ... aining.htm?

This could be following by smoking the hides and have another usage for bark to force tannic acids into the hides http://www.braintanbuckskin.com/Tanning ... moking.htm?
Oh no, looks like I might die as I have lived. In the wrong place at the wrong time
