Survivalist's skill cap concerns

Post by Skjotur »

I've been planning out my skill goals at level 100. For a survivalist character I'm slightly concerned. I don't want to do everything the best but I do hope to be good at some things, while having a wide enough general skill set to be able to survive in the wild on my own. I know before there was some talk about bushcraft skill being useful for basics of other skills. So for instance if I put a lot of points in bushcraft, will I be able to get by with survivalist means in for instance, foraging, woodworking, knapping, basic cooking? I just need enough to survive by, meaning making my own basic tools and being able to cook what I forage or hunt. I don't want to be making great craftsmanship tools or meals. Or will I have to also invest points into those individual skills? And if so, what will the bushcraft skill do to make it worth putting points into?

As currently planned, Bushcraft will be useful for the following:
- Access to Bushcraft-specific survival abilities. (Setting snares and other hunting traps, adjusting gear for better weather protection, other stuff in that vein)
- Affecting foraging rolls for applicable forage (wouldn't apply to specialist stuff like some special herbs used by medical practitioners, for instance)
- Affecting skinning rolls with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated practitioners (ability required) - no access to specialist skinning techniques
- Access to survivalist knapping recipes with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated practitioners (ability required)
- Access to survivalist woodworking recipes with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated practitioners (ability required)
- Access to survivalist leatherworking recipes with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated practitioners (ability required)
- Access to survivalist first aid techniques/recipes with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated medical practitioners (ability required)
- Access to survivalist cooking recipes with a lower bonus ceiling than dedicated practitioners.

The more points in Bushcraft, the more related recipes/abilities can be unlocked. This can help survivalists avoid spreading themselves too thin on skill points in a bunch of different things while also not making them specialists at any of these things. If you want to better than "passable with access to survivalist-oriented recipes only", you'll want to invest points into the related skill rather than relying on Bushcraft.
