Translation
Have linguistics work like research for translating text.
- Copy the unknown writing (linguistics skill check, requires writing tools (quill and paper or slate and chalk, maybe also quill and portfolio?))
- Take it to the library (maybe replace the un-used current events section with a language section? or pair the languages stacks with the history stacks)
- Try to translate the text (linguistics skill check, based on level of success on the copying check)
- If both checks are successful, translate the text
- If the early check failed but the second passed, identify the language and require making a new copy but provide a bonus on subsequent attempts to copy the same text
- If the second check fails (regardless of the success/fail state of the first check) minimal progress gets made
- Have a cooldown like research (24 hours) or study (8 hours).
Have language learning work like the glyph-learning system (kind of)
- Have a general language granting ability that expands linguistic capacity past the default level of starter languages, allow it be taken once per 50 or 100 ranks of linguistics.
- Once language capacity is expanded, the learner goes to the language stacks to study to learn basic literacy of the language. e.g. study Giganti, study Heucatn, etc.
- Go to different regional locations and study to unlock spoken fluency of the language
- Different languages can have different levels of complexity
- Written/spoken languages can have separate levels of complexity too (like make Viali easy to learn to speak, but horrid to learn to read/write, etc.)
