Octum Approaches (and the Octum Festival)

Post by Rias »

One week from now we'll be in the month of Octum, which is an interesting time of year in the Lost Lands with traditions, wandering nethrim, and a festival! For those interested in some general information, look to the article on Octum here (or type HELP OCTUM in-game).

In the month of Octum, the Wraith constellation is prominent in the night sky, gazing down at our world with its icy blue eyes. Legend has it that this stirs up lost spirits as nethrim, which can often be found wandering the roads of the Lost Lands during the month. Travelers are advised to not disturb these spirits and simply move past them quickly - remaining near for too long will cause them to become increasingly agitated until they may begin to act dangerously, even if sometimes it seems to be unintentional on the part of the lost spirit.

Other dangers often spoken of during the month of Octum include increased nethrim activity in general, roving werewolf packs, and encounters with the Headless Lord; a headless rider astride a nightmare steed that has a penchant for using his cutlass to remove the heads of others he encounters on the roads.

Two particularly prominent traditions during Octum are the Deathly Masquerade in which people wear costumes to appear as nethrim in the hope of escaping the Octum Wraith's notice, and charm-seeking, which will be possible every day of the month. A costume shop will be available soon for those who don't have one already from previous years, or just wish to get a new one. Once properly costumed and holding a container in hand, once can use the CHARMSEEK command in populated town rooms to participate in charmseeking.

This year the Octum Festival will begin on the 13th and run until the very end of the month. The festival grounds will be set up at Barrow Hill, and a temporary trail will be blazed to help guide travelers to it. Directions will be given once the festival is ready to begin. The Octum Festival will include:

- Several merchants with unique wares (apparel, gear, crafting materials, planting seeds, animals, RP fluff/props, and more)
- Custom restring/alteration opportunities
- Games such as bobbing for apples, pumpkin toss, and scarecrow smashing
- Services such as tattooing and fortunetelling
- NPCs to tell stories and share new lore or information
- And more!

The festival will start fairly small on the 13th, with new merchants or services being added as the month goes on, so there will always be something to look forward to and reasons to return to the festival grounds throughout the whole month!

Some other fun things to mention about Octum: pumpkins sell for more at the market, and and you can carve your own pumpkin-lantern, too!

The Octum Festival will open at 19:00 server time (MST) tomorrow! It will start off with several shops and a few little games, with additional services and merchants being added as the month continues.

Note: Limited-time events such as alteration merchants will be announced OOC as well as IC to help people be aware of when they're happening, even if they're not in-game when the events start.

The Octum Festival grounds are now open! A trail has been blazed to the entry gate, branching off the road just over the river beyond the northeast fork near Tarueka.

Please recall that this is the only beginning, with some shops and the Pumpkin Toss game (see if you can set the daily record!). More shops, games, and events will be added as the month goes on, so don't make today your only visit!

Some additional notes:
- A few Octum Festival Arrows have been set out at wilderness intersections to help guide people to the festival out on the roads. Remember that you can also use the TRAVEL command on trails, so once you find the trail that branches off the main road, you can TRAVEL it to be taken straight to the festival gate automatically.
- There are quite a few scripted items in the shops. They will note which commands can be used to trigger their scripts when ORDERed or EXAMINed. These scripts are little canned messages that activate off the item and are just for show (no mechanical effects). Some are simpler, a few may be a bit more interesting and unique to their specific items. Oh, and one of them is a smoking pipe, which I know is something people have been asking about!
- There's a bonfire at the southeast corner of the festival for anyone that needs to warm up before making the journey back home from the festival grounds. There are also a couple food stalls in this area.
- Please report any bugs, typos, potential oversights, etc. with the BUG command!
- Feedback is always appreciated! Please post any feedback here on this BBS thread.

Just so everyone knows: The Octum Trinkets shop opened a new section (head north after entering the tent) which sells special ESP artifacts that can have their crystals replaced. You can take any standard ESP pendant (like those commonly found in lockboxes) and PUT it IN these new types of ESP artifacts to swap the crystal into them, giving them the duration of the swapped crystal. This will destroy the pendant whose crystal is being taken from it in the process.

What this means is that these fancy-looking ESP artifacts can be used forever, as long as one keeps replacing their crystals. Particularly nice for those who want to get an ESP artifact customized.

Rumors have been floating around about a woman at the festival grounds who has been talking to festival-goers about how the Lost Lands is changing, and has been decrying the harsh prejudices and aggressions against those individuals who have been changing along with it. It seems she's been informing individuals of a place that can serve as a safe haven not only to those oppressed by these prejudices, but for anyone who values tolerance and understanding, or simply wishes to face the changing of the Lost Lands with education and understanding rather than blind fear and violence.

Another quick announcement, The Blunted Edge has opened up in the festival grounds.

A niche store, but hopefully some people will enjoy. Please note, that at the current time they can't be repaired by players but can be by NPCs. This will change.

The Auction Items are all up and available to be seen at the Festival now, along with the rules on how to participate.

If any clarifications are needed on rules, I will get them added.
