Mortal Blows

Post by Rias »

A new feature has been implemented under the tentative term "Mortal Blow". A Mortal Blow is a singular damaging blow to a vital hit location doing enough damage to cause death, even if that hit location's damage hasn't been maxed out. Right now the mechanics are very simple, but will likely get more complex over time.

So let's say I'm using a handaxe and land a hit to an opponent's neck for 57 hack damage. Most people familiar with the combat system know that the common damage max for humanoid target hit locations is 100 - after accumulating 100 (or more) damage to the neck, a typical humanoid creature would die. However, taking only 57 hack damage to the neck in a single blow results in the death of the target due to this new "Mortal Blow" system, even if the neck was completely unharmed before then and had not reached the damage cap of 100.

Different damage types have varying Mortal Blow thresholds, and this will certainly undergo a lot of tweaking.

Certain weapon qualities may end up having bonuses (or penalties) that affect these thresholds, both permanent (special weapon materials such as bloodglass for edged weapons, or a heavier-than-usual material for crush/bludgeon/hack/puncture weapons) and temporary (things like enchantments or temporary extra sharpening).

P.S. Wear armor in combat. Just do it.
