How the Experience Bucket Works

Post by Marcuson »

Just wanted to post some technical notes I'd taken. Most of this is probably commonly-known already.
  • At 100%, the bucket contains 750 experience. It is possible to fill the bucket over 100%, but that's only possible if you are at 99% or less.
  • The bucket drains 15 experience (or 2%) every minute at the top of the minute into your character's lifetime experience. It takes 50 minutes for the bucket to drain from 100% to 0%.
  • Reflection therapy boosts the bucket drain to 16.5 experience per minute.
  • Roleplay Awards boost the bucket drain to twice your rate (30 experience per minute or 33 per minute with reflection therapy).
  • RPAs last for 25 minutes each, and they stack in terms of duration.

Just to clarify: RPAs are for a set amount of experience points earned (which does stack with multiple RPAs), and will not expire over time but rather when the points are earned. It was set up this way so people wouldn't feel rushed to run out and grind as much as possible as soon as they get an RPA. If a character has some experience in their bucket being earned every minute, then the effect will end after 25 minutes because the math works out, but it's not just because 25 minutes passed.

TL;DR: RPAs are based on experience earned rather than time elapsed, so there's no need to feel rushed to grind experience when one is received.

Some more notes on experience, along with Sunset Points:
  • Recall that each sip from the bucket -- assuming you have experience -- is once per minute, at the top of the minute.
  • When decreasing skills, you receive 7.5 experience points per sip instead of the normal 15. If you are decreasing one skill, then that skill's "current" and "practice" levels will both decrease by 0.450 points per sip (or 0.225 points if over 100, etc.). In other words, on average, you will get back 9 skill points every twenty sips.
  • Reflection therapy raises those variables by 10%: if decreasing skills while under the effects of reflection therapy, you will receive 8.25 experience per sip. Your "current" and "practice" levels will decrease by 0.495 points per sip. On average, you will get back 9.9 skill points every twenty sips.
  • When Sunset Points are enabled, you will receive a flat 15 extra experience per sip at a cost of 30 Sunset Points. Sunset Points are not affected by decreasing skills or by reflection therapy: you receive 15 extra experience per sip no matter what, as long as Sunset Points are enabled.
  • Currently, I don't know how RPAs affect any of this.
