I was really hoping to hear a reply like that. I think that the best approach is to always attempt to resolve personal conflicts ICly, and constantly remembering that you shouldn't take IC insults, slights or attacks personally is one of the best steps to take for that. I'd imagine that unless the world is very small, a half second is probably the highest I'd go. That still leaves plenty of time to see what's in the room without taking too unnecessarily long.
